AI-Enabled WhatsApp Communication Platform
Category: Conversational Systems | Automation | AI Integration
Scope: Platform Strategy, UX Design, Automation Architecture, AI Integration
Open Skies developed an AI-enabled WhatsApp bot to improve communication between the church and its congregation. The system allows members to access information about events, projects, donations, and church resources directly through WhatsApp.
By centralising key information into a conversational interface, the platform provides a simple and accessible way for people to stay informed both during and outside of services.
The church community relied heavily on in-service announcements and projected slides to communicate upcoming events, contact details, and important updates. Congregation members often had to quickly photograph screens during services to remember dates, bank details, or event information.
This created several challenges. Information could easily be missed by people who were not present at a service, and the act of taking photos during gatherings became distracting for others.
Open Skies sought to create a digital solution that would allow members to access essential information at any time without disrupting the experience of the service itself.
The goal was not simply to distribute information digitally, but to create a communication system that felt natural and easy for the congregation to use.
The platform needed to:
Provide quick access to frequently requested information
Support event updates and church initiatives
Allow users to request assistance or prayer support
Maintain alignment with the church’s beliefs and values
Operate within a platform already widely used by the community
WhatsApp was selected as the primary interface, allowing members to interact with the system in a familiar environment without requiring additional applications.
Rather than developing a traditional website portal, the solution focused on building a conversational interface that guides users to relevant information through simple menu selections.
This approach reduces friction and ensures that users can quickly access the information they need using a platform they already engage with daily.
By structuring the system around clear conversational flows, the bot acts as a digital information hub for the church community.
The Open Skies bot was built using an integrated automation architecture combining messaging infrastructure, workflow automation, and AI services.
The technical stack includes:
Meta / WhatsApp Business messaging infrastructure
SendPulse for chatbot management
Make.com for workflow automation
Claude API for AI-assisted responses
These systems work together to deliver automated responses, manage user interactions, and connect different services within the platform.
The architecture was designed to be modular, allowing additional workflows and conversational features to be added as the needs of the community evolve.
A key feature of the system is the use of AI to support prayer requests submitted through the bot.
When users submit a request, the AI provides supportive guidance aligned with the church’s ethos, offering suggestions for prayer or encouragement while maintaining sensitivity to the user’s situation.
The system also includes safeguards to ensure that responses remain aligned with the church’s beliefs. Requests outside the scope of the platform’s guidelines are redirected toward human support through church leadership or counselling services.
This combination of automation and oversight allows the platform to provide meaningful assistance while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
The Open Skies WhatsApp platform was developed by ANTI.Social Collective as a fully integrated conversational system.
The project included:
Conversational UX flow design
Platform and interaction strategy
Chatbot interface design
Backend automation architecture
AI response integration
Messaging workflow configuration
DevOps and deployment
The system was designed to provide reliable access to information while maintaining a simple user experience suitable for a broad range of users.
The WhatsApp bot has significantly improved communication between the church and its congregation.
Members can now access event details, donation information, and community updates at any time, reducing confusion around announcements and schedules.
The system has also reduced the need for people to photograph screens during services, creating a more focused and respectful environment during gatherings.
With approximately 700 monthly active users, the platform demonstrates how conversational systems can effectively support community communication and engagement.
