THE CONTEXT
A specialist industry needed a specialist platform.
The British watchmaking industry has been experiencing a renewed period of growth, with increasing interest in domestic manufacturing and craft-led production. However, as the industry rebuilds its workforce, both employers and skilled professionals face a structural challenge: finding one another.
Unlike larger sectors with established recruitment channels, watchmaking is a highly specialised field with a relatively small talent pool. Traditional job platforms often fail to surface relevant opportunities or candidates, making it difficult for employers to locate the right skills and for professionals to discover roles suited to their expertise.
British Watchmakers initiated the Careers Hub platform as part of a broader effort to support the revitalisation of the industry — creating a dedicated digital space where employers and candidates could connect, share opportunities, and strengthen the future talent pipeline for British watchmaking.
THE STRATEGIC CHALLENGE
Strategic challenge
Designing a platform for a niche industry presents unique constraints.
Traditional job boards rely on simple keyword search. For Careers Hub, the challenge was to build a system capable of intelligently matching candidate profiles with industry-specific opportunities.
The system needed to:
- Match highly specialised skills to specific roles
- Allow employers to identify qualified candidates quickly
- Maintain relevance within a small but growing industry network
- Provide structured data for meaningful candidate matching
- Enable scalable growth as the industry expands
Strategic approach
A purpose-built industry recruitment ecosystem
The platform was designed as a purpose-built industry recruitment ecosystem, rather than a generic job portal.
Instead of relying purely on manual search, Careers Hub uses structured profile data combined with AI-assisted analysis to identify the most relevant candidate-job matches.
This approach improves the quality of recommendations while reducing friction for both employers and candidates.
Platform architecture
A reliable foundation for a specialist sector
Careers Hub was developed as a monolithic web application designed for reliability and efficient deployment.
The platform architecture includes:
- Laravel and PHP backend framework
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript front-end interface
- External chat libraries for employer communication
- OpenAI API integration for intelligent matching functionality
Profiles and maintainability
Structured data makes meaningful matching possible
The system allows candidates to create detailed profiles including experience, qualifications, location, and CV data, while employers can publish company profiles and open roles within the industry.
The platform was also designed with scalability and long-term maintainability in mind. By structuring candidate and employer data in a consistent format, the system enables meaningful analysis of skills, experience, and job requirements — forming the foundation for intelligent matching and future platform enhancements as the industry ecosystem grows.
AI-enhanced talent matching
Connecting relevant experience with industry opportunities
A key capability of the platform is its AI-assisted matching engine.
Using candidate profile data and employer job requirements, the system analyses candidate experience, CV information, geographic location, and relevant industry skills.
The AI layer then identifies and surfaces the most suitable matches between candidates and available roles.
Employers can review suggested candidates and initiate direct conversations through the integrated messaging system. To maintain a structured hiring process, communication flows from employer to candidate rather than the other way around.
